THREE god-damn segments with stupid watch adverts: one before the episode, one halfway through and one at the end. " -hope that fucker with the watch company isn’t in every episode or I’ll end up getting very annoyed. I thought that the watch ads were quaint. What is not dated is the originality of being first. But it's 70 years old fer gosh sake! Everything from the way they translated actual original ideas, to the biases of the time, to the melodramatic acting is dated. Either thoughts & inventions or characterswho are not human.

I liked the earnest attempts to introduce the idea that there are things out there. Having watched dozens of them, I would only pick out a 6-10 of them as being really enjoyable to watch. But for now, Dimension 404 takes the number one slot, and on balance, perhaps deservedly so. Number one is something of a maverick, from a show with only six episodes, so it’s unlikely that it will hold the top spot for long. Number two only surprises me as I assumed it would be number one, but I confidently expect Black Mirror to go in only one direction from this on. I’m very fond of Monsters, and though it has, like most series, its duff episodes, they seem to be few and far between. Number three thoroughly deserves its high placing. Can it maintain its position? We’ll have to wait to answer that question.

A case of punching above its weight? Perhaps. Every episode of Tales from the Darkside I ever saw was pretty much rubbish, so surprising that this one was so good. Number five I just don’t believe should be this high, but it made it on some criteria such as Predictability and Innovation, so what can you do? A poor story overall, but we’ll see how future episodes of Tales from the Crypt fare. I had never seen Are You Afraid of the Dark? before, other than when my sister watched it, and overall it wasn’t a terrible story, though the episodes will have to vastly improve if they want to start moving in the right direction. Number six then does well for what is basically a show for kids. I’m actually surprised both shows are so relatively high. Amazing Stories frankly bored me, and was the kind of thing you might see in a really, really bad episode of one of the far superior shows. Almost worth it, to see Serling in colour! But not quite. Given the star quality and pedigree of Rod Serling, I had expected Night Gallery to do better than just grind out a third-rate Hammer Horror story, but again maybe it was just a poor example. Number seven is shared by two series, neither of which impressed me. Of course The Twilight Zone has far, far better episodes, and I expect to see it move fairly quickly once we get checking some of them. Things to take into account here would be that this is a reboot episode - in fact, a second reboot, the first of the so far two of the twenty-first century - and that the story, when it came down to it, was weak and quite hackneyed. I am frankly stupefied that this isn’t at least in the top three, but there you go. Very poor, but maybe just a bad start? We’ll see in the coming months. Things that have to be taken into account I guess are the age of the show (early 1950s) and the fact that it was really - at least, in this episode - more of a vehicle for capturing an audience to which the sponsor could sell their product, so how good did the story have to be? Well, not very good here at least. Despite Pogo’s love of the show, this was a terrible episode and has not left me eager to watch more Tales of Tomorrow.

Better episodes are definitely needed if it’s to move though.Īt number nine, on the other hand, no real amazement here. Hope to see it rise in the future and get more towards its deserved place in the top five, even three. But a poor placing for this episode does not of course mean that the show will remain there, just that we happened to pick a really bad episode. This is a surprise to me, as while it was never my favourite of these type of shows, I always considered it one of the two “elder statesmen” of the genre, in that, everyone who knew The Twilight Zone had heard of The Outer Limits. (Cue Top of the Pops music and stupid DJ voice…)Īt number ten, we have The Outer Limits. It just shows how drilling down into the specific episodes rather than relying on an arbitrary rating can change everything.
